The Coalesce C_001 smartwatch aims to challenge the convention of current consumer technology trends, fusing the innate qualities and personality of analog timepieces with the functionality of their digital counterparts. By elevating and supplementing the analog features with technology rather than replacing them with a digital touchscreen, the C_001 smartwatch aims to become a timepiece that is crafted and treasured, rather than mass produced and replaced with the newest version. This shift in mentality towards a consumer electronic product addresses larger concerns with global resources, electronic waste in landfill, and a consumerist culture where complex expensive products are regularly replaced in a much smaller timeframe than ever before.

The product does not feature a touch sensitive screen, instead keeping all display elements beneath a sapphire crystal glass dome. Screens often crack on modern consumer electronic products and are treated roughly by users, betraying their natural fragility. Therefore the C_001 screen is kept out of direct contact with the user to increase longevity, and to separate the experience from other screen based smartwatches. By moving away from touch screen technology, a more tactile and familiar experience is created by using the crown as the primary control interface.

An overview of some example screens shows how functionality can be added to the watch without being visually overwhelming for the user. By using simple and easy to understand graphical representations of information, the smartwatch retains the ability to be glanced at and understood quickly, similarly to how analog watches are generally interacted with.

An Induction charger is housed within the dock, and features a magnetic surface which allows the watch to snap into place, resting slightly submerged in the top surface. The dock would be clad in the same material as the watch body, creating a unified and minimal aesthetic.

I created a detailed estimation and rendering of the internal components were the product to be fully engineered. This was achieved by studying components found in both smart and analog watches.

An overview of the four C_001 editions.

The C_001 Packaging takes the elongated form of a minimal watch box, with an accent branding sleeve. The box opens like a book and presents the smartwatch to the user, whilst on the other side the Instructions, Charging dock and strap replacement tool are partially obscured behind frosted plastic. This creates a slower reveal of the contents when opening the packaging, adding depth to the unboxing experience.
